Overview

ExpeDat is a suite of file transfer software which uses Multipurpose Transaction Protocol® technology (MTP/IP) to send and receive files more quickly and reliably than traditional FTP applications.  Refer to the Features chapter or the Product Website for an overview of features and benefits.

The ExpeDat application suite consists of a server and several client applications, which can be used to move files between IP networked computers:

ExpeDat Desktop A desktop file browser for Windows and macOS.  Features high-speed file uploads and downloads, built-in encryption and compression, and web-browser integration.
DropDat Creates pre-configured upload clients ("droplets") for Windows and macOS, and custom configured Desktop instances.
ExpeDat Mobile A media and document uploader for iOS.
WebDat A headless Windows and macOS file transfer agent for use with webpage APIs.
movedat A highly scriptable command line client for all supported platforms.
servedat A high-volume, high-efficiency file server capable of integrating into a wide variety of host environments.

These applications function similarly to FTP clients, servers, and browsers.  To use these applications, you must run servedat on one computer, and then use one of the clients on another device to transfer files.  The Setup chapter contains complete instructions for preparing and installing the software.

As with all network software, you must ensure that any firewalls between your computers are configured to allow ExpeDat's traffic.  By default, this means explicitly allowing UDP/IP port 8080 to pass through.  The Connectivity section contains additional details and links to further information.  Tech Note 0002 can be particularly helpful in adjusting devices which may be interfering with your network path.

The Performance section describes how the underlying MTP/IP technology allows you to fully utilize your network path and how you can control that performance.  Read that section carefully to understand how to achieve the best performance from your data path.

If you receive errors while using the software, refer to the Troubleshooting section for a list of common errors and solutions.  Less common issue are documented in the Known Issues section.
